Type in Traffic
Does it help to own more than one domain name? Technically the answer is no, multiple domain names do not translate directly into higher traffic. After all, people use search engines to find sites - or do they?
It turns out a large percentage of Internet users don't use search engines at all. Instead they go to the browser's Address Bar and type in what they want. If they're looking for candy for example, they type in Candy.com. They bypass search engines completely.
What percentage of traffic comes from type-in traffic? Here's what CNN.com had to say about it:
No one knows for sure how much Web traffic comes from type-ins, and Google and Yahoo execs won't discuss it. But privately, during one of the late-night parties at the Traffic conference, one Yahoo official estimates that type-ins could make up 15 percent of its search business.
So, if you own a category domain name (like candy.com) you may be the recipient of type-in traffic. Type-in traffic never goes away! This is one reason why companies are willing to spend big money for a domain name. The domain name IS the marketing campaign. It comes with traffic built in.
I'm proud that Internet Man is in that category. If you type Internet Man (two words) into your browser's address bar you wind up at our site. Admittedly Internet Man isn't much of a major category, but we're still happy about it. If we could just get people to type in Internet Man, we may have something.
If you'd like to look at type-in traffic domain names for your business, give us a call.
