Tips and Tricks: Video on the Web

Video on the Web

Do you want to stream video from your Site?

Until now it's been complicated for two reasons:

1)There has been no clear favorite for video. Flash, Windows, Mac, and Real Media each compete with 25 percent of the market. If your audience doesn't have the appropriate video player installed they can't see your clip.

2)Streaming media had to be served from a media server. This was a technical hurdle and most certainly an up charge. That's a lot of work for a video that "might" play.

Those days are over now.

Flash video has emerged as the dominant Web video format with Windows, Mac, and Real Media fading into obscurity. Flash (a development tool for Internet animation) has been around for years. Several years ago they added video to their tool. It turned out, quite by accident, that Flash video was quite good. In fact it was better than anything on the market. It's superior quality and smaller files, coupled with the fact that over 90 percent of browsers already have the Flash player installed, made Flash Video a slam dunk. It is THE video format of choice.

If that wasn't enough, it turns out Flash video doesn't need a video server. Flash video comes with streaming capability built in. Here's how to add video to your site:

1. Upload your video to your computer

2. Encode it into Flash video using the Flash program

3. Embed your video into a streaming Flash player

4. FTP your video to the Web.

That's it! Just encode, upload and you're done. Flash video is easy to create, looks great, and can be played directly from the site. After a decade of confusion a clear video winner has emerged. When it comes to Web video, Flash video is the way to go.
