Tips and Tricks: iPhone and the Internet

iPhone and the Internet

I'm an Internet man, first and foremost. I'm also a Mac guy.

As a Mac guy, I'm intrigued with the IPhone. The IPhone is quickly becoming the dominant hand-held Internet device. It is becoming a standard. Developers are creating IPhone applications and offering them for download in droves at the Apple store. Many of these applications are amazing.

The IPhone and the Internet make a strong team. As a developer myself, the IPhone platform is exciting - the Internet is the hub and the IPhone is a satellite. Together it's an unbeatable combination.

No one thought the IPhone would become an entirely new Internet platform. Big Internet players like Amazon, Google, and Ebay have moved onto the IPhone platform in a big way. Amazon has the Amazon Mobile app, Google has the Google Mobile app, and eBay has the eBay Mobile app. All are offered at the Apple store for free. For free, that's pretty cool.

Not everyone is at a fixed location all day (like me). Many people are mobile. For those that are, the IPhone is hard to beat. Emerging Internet leaders are getting in position now to take advantage of the next generation Internet. Specifically this means securing the dot mobi (short for mobile) extension of your domain name now.

You may want to make a tiny version of your site, a variation of it, or a completely new IPhone app. If you do, you'll already have the proper domain name to build the app around. Looking at it another way, think how you'd feel if someone got the mobile version of your domain name. There is absolutely nothing to stop them. In the eyes of the Internet, it's a completely separate name. Go to Go Daddy and do it.
